Result and general impression …
We were able to show in the Homematic HM-Dis-WM55 review where the strengths and weaknesses of the OLED display from Homematic are and are enthusiastic about the display, but also see potential in the interaction with the Homematic IP power supply for brand switches, which was also tested.
We would be pleased if eQ-3 would integrate an option field for the selection of battery or power supply operation in the next firmware version, as it did with the E-Ink Status Display, in order to offer a permanent or at least remote display option. At the moment, the OLED Status Display from Homematic only provides a one-touch display, which covers many applications, but not all. It’s good news that, as with the Homematic E-Paper Display, a distinction is made between a short or long keystroke, so that a total of four switching operations can be triggered. In our example, a long upward push-button action raises all the shutters or a long downward push-button action lowers all the shutters. In the display, a short upward push-button action shows whether all the windows and doors are closed and which one has been left open and a short downward push-button action shows whether all the shutters are down. You could even combine both on the 6 lines and output more data.
We have mixed feelings about the Homematic OLED Status Display and unfortunately cannot give a clear recommendation to buy. On the one hand, the OLED display offers a permanent display, for example, to show a status such as windows closed, shutters down, lights in the house switched off. On the other hand, the data traffic and power consumption is so high for frequently changing conditions that no reasonable use is possible, for example as a temperature display, temperature difference display, exact status of windows or doors. At least not if frequent transmission such as changing the display every time the windows and doors are opened and closed is desired. Daily queries or individual queries by keystroke are not a problem if programmed accordingly, but use in continuous operation is quite limited as a result. The field of application therefore determines the suitability in practice.
All in all, the Homematic OLED Status Display kit is quickly assembled, the full-color display is clearly recognizable, the additional symbols are helpful, the battery life is very long, and with the optionally available power supply, these can even be omitted. The only thing missing is the permanent display or the possibility to switch on the display via the control panel.
As an alternative to the OLED status display, eQ-3 offers the recent tested Homematic E-Paper Display *Ad for permanent display and if the display size is not enough for you, we will present a completely different solution in a bigger project soon. Basically the Homematic products are a great thing, because you can convert your house or flat to a smarthome without much effort thanks to 868.3 MHz radio transmission and hobbyists even save money thanks to the optionally available kits.
